Over 500 notary office hit by a cyberattack

The French notary sector has been hit by one of the most significant cyberattacks in recent years.
According to information reported by FrenchBreaches, more than 500 notary offices were allegedly compromised, enabling cybercriminals to steal nearly €40 million over a two-year period.

The scale of the attack was so severe that ANSSI (the French National Cybersecurity Agency) raised concerns about the potential creation of fraudulent notarial deeds by the attackers. Such a scenario poses a serious threat to the integrity of official legal documents and the trust placed in real estate transactions.

In addition, the French Higher Council of Notaries is also reported to have been compromised, demonstrating that even well-established institutions are not immune to cyber threats.

A Threat That Extends Beyond the Notary Sector

This incident highlights a reality that every organization must now face: no industry is immune to cyberattacks. Today, cybercriminals target any organization that stores sensitive information or handles significant financial transactions.

The consequences extend far beyond financial losses:

Loss or exposure of sensitive data
Business disruption
Reputational damage
Loss of trust from customers and partners
Regulatory and legal consequences

Protecting Sensitive Data Must Remain a Priority

Preventive security measures are essential, but they are no longer sufficient on their own. Organizations must also ensure that their most sensitive data remains protected, even if attackers succeed in breaching their systems.

Strong encryption, full control over encryption keys, robust access management, secure backups, and a well-defined incident response plan are now fundamental pillars of an effective cybersecurity strategy.

This incident serves as another reminder that the real question is no longer whether an organization will be targeted, but whether it is prepared to minimize the impact when an attack occurs.
